It’s a Mattawa Adventure All the Way!
Located just east of North Bay and only a short drive from Toronto and Ottawa, exists an awesome winter playground for snowmobilers with endless groomed trails to explore. It is called Mattawa, which in Ojibwa, means “meeting of the waters” which is appropriate given that this tourism town is at the intersection of the historical Mattawa and Ottawa Rivers.
This is a region that is rich with culture and provides a picturesque sampling of the Canadian Shield that is home to an abundance of wildlife. For snowmobilers, you’ll want to bring your camera to capture your memories of the moose, deer and eagles in the area. Located in the OFSC District 11, sledders will take pleasure in the more than 200 kilometres of year-round Snowmobile and ATV trails, known as the Voyageur Multi Use Trail System (VMUTS). Enthusiasts jump at the chance to take advantage of the massive snowfalls and enjoy one of the longest sledding seasons in Ontario. Many riding options branch off in all directions if you choose to chart your own route or you can hop onto the famous RAP (Round Algonquin Park) Tour. The tour loops around the perimeter of Algonquin Provincial Park and is 1,000 kilometres of outstanding trails with an exciting mix of old logging roads, abandoned rail lines and picture-perfect forests. The region offers some of the best snowmobiling in Ontario and invites you out for a weeklong vacation, a High-Milers long weekend or even a one-day excursion loop to North Bay and back – regardless of your choice, the snowmobiling in this area is guaranteed to have you grinning from ear to ear.
With great trails comes the need for a great place to stay. One such place in Mattawa that welcomes riders openly is the Mattawa Adventure Camp. After your wild winter adventure of riding the trails this is a place to chill out. It offers a main lodge accommodations as well as motel rooms overlooking the Ottawa River. This is an authentic lodge setting, that is warm and welcoming with home-cooked meals, including a packed lunch and jacuzzi tubs to recharge you for the next day’s adventure. For a little fun factor, nightly karaoke in the lounge is sure to entertain and attract the aspiring singer in the crew. The parking lot is big and wide to handle your trucks, trailers and sleds making the Mattawa Adventure Camp a great location from which to stage and start. Even better, it has easy access to the OFSC trails.
